Catfood
Date: 07/27/2008
This "cat" is on the prowl for supper. Photo by Mike Coleman, not sure where.
Clark's signature at Pompey's Pillar
Date: 07/26/2004
Captain Clark's signature and date are carved into this rock at Pompey's Pillar.
Lake City here we come
Date: 07/02/2004
Beth, Robert and (momma) Jackie Voglino just above Creede, Colorado enroute Lake City.
Gil and Matt just above Creede.
Date: 07/02/2004
Matt was recently back from survival training in the mountains above the Air Force Academy and was plenty glad to be on vacation.
Campsite at Henson Creek RV Park
Date: 07/03/2004
As you can see, we had THE creek view! Sleeping next to that creek is heavenly.
4th of July overflight
Date: 07/04/2004
We were lucky enough to be there on the 4th of July. Lake City does quite a celebration with a parade. Here we have an F16 flight of four approaching. Look closely to see the aircraft.
Matt, doing what he does best
Date: 07/05/2004
We had gone to Crested Butte and were on the pass road above CB that comes out above Paonia
American Basis
Date: 07/07/2004
Jeeping the Alpine Loop over two passes -- this is American Basin on the way to Cinnamon Pass. We were early for the wildflowers. In about two weeks this basin will be a collage of colors.
Cinnamon Pass
Date: 07/07/2004
The first pass encountered driving the Alpine Loop clockwise is Cinnamon. Matt explores.
Animas Forks
Date: 07/07/2004
Old mineworks abound on the Alpine Loop. Animas Forks is beyond Cinnamon Pass from Lake City and from there you go to Silverton, Ouray or over Engineer Pass which was our route.
Miners?
Date: 07/07/2004
An old mine that was quickly abandoned. We're about 10 feet into the mountain side and already at the end of where this miner gave up.
Little Switzerland
Date: 07/07/2004
We're on a knoll (the shale in the foreground) just short of Engineer Pass. The alpine meadow below and mountain peaks surrounding present a simply astounding visual experience.
Cottonwood Pass
Date: 07/09/2004
Leaving Lake City on Friday we went to Gunnison, then Almont and over Cottonwood Pass. The dirt road ascending was decent.
Can you hear me now?
Date: 07/10/2004
South of Jackson Hole, Wyoming we camped a couple of miles up a canyon and discovered that while standing on this rock we had a digital cell signal. Verizon should hire us!
The famous phone rock
Date: 07/11/2004
It also made a good kitchen table. I was fixing a little breakfast while Robert rode into town for coffee. While he was gone, an obvious ex-con came strolling up the road and turned up the valley. Suspicious.
KOA at Whitefish
Date: 07/12/2004
We camped three days at the Whitefish KOA, just about 12 miles from the West Glacier entrance.
Enroute Avalanche Lake
Date: 07/13/2004
Avalanche Lake is fed by many waterfalls from snow and glacier melts and produces a rushing stream.
Avalanche Stream
Date: 07/13/2004
We hiked along the stream coming down from Avalanche Lake while it meandered and crashed down the mountain side.
Yeah, it's cold water!
Date: 07/13/2004
Walking into the water my feet hurt badly due to the sharp gravel form by rock being frozen and cracking. Walking back out was painless: my feet were numb!
No need for a tent
Date: 07/16/2004
The sky was clear and the weather mild and, well just maybe, Robert was a little lazy and did not put up his tent.
Camping below Mount Hood
Date: 07/16/2004
And I just put up the hammock for the night. Of course, my butt was dragging the ground by morning from the sagging.
Closer
Date: 07/18/2004
Further down the Oregon coast we got closer to the ocean. This photo shows the bike setup pretty clearly.
Big Tree Data
Date: 07/18/2004
A feature in the redwood forest is the "Big Tree." Here's the data on it.
Backside of the Big Tree
Date: 07/18/2004
This is a view of the backside of the Big Tree taken from the far end of the parking lot. I would estimate that I was a least 100 yards from the base of the tree with the camera at maximum wide angle (about 28mm focal length in 35mm camera terms). That sucker is BIG.
The next loneliest
Date: 07/20/2004
Hwy 6 in Nevada. US 50 is said to be the loneliest, but this one qualifies pretty nicely.
Zion in the distance
Date: 07/21/2004
A glimpse of Zion National Park in the distance. In 2006 I would make it there.
Ready for home
Date: 07/22/2004
This is what a hardy biker looks like the morning after an almost 700 mile day. Not bad! I think this was Cedar City, Utah
View above Flaming Gorge
Date: 07/26/2004
Flaming Gorge Reservoir. Another photo by Mike Coleman. In 2006 I would camp in a National Forest primitive campground near here.
Pompey's Pillar
Date: 07/26/2004
Photo by Mike Coleman at Pompey's Pillar -- Along the entire Lewis & Clark Trail there is just one spot where you don't have to imagine the famed explorers having been there. That location is Montana's Pompeys Pillar, 28 miles east of Billings, just off of I-94. Clark's signature, the day and date remain visible on the towering pillar's rock face. Protected by a see-through covering, the signature can be viewed any time of year.
