July 2006 - final trip summary
Submitted by CaptainJustice on Mon, 07/24/2006 - 12:05pm.It's over but not forgotten. A great trip with many memories, one of which I could do without (the valve stem debacle). I departed June 30 in the early morning and got back home about 1:30PM on July 21. The trip had been planned to include the national BMW rally in Vermont but I opted to delete that leg due to a lot of reasons including the heat that would be involved in that 2200 mile leg, the fact that once there I was 2400 miles from home, and I was missing Jennifer more than just a little bit.

Ouray & Telluride, July 19
Submitted by CaptainJustice on Mon, 07/24/2006 - 9:35am.Having spent all day Tuesday getting a new rear tire for me, Mike Atkinson and I had a super day of riding on Wednesday. There are so many places to go from this area that it's hard to make choices, but Ouray is an easy choice. We got an early start after a small breakfast at Poker Alice's restaurant and headed for Ouray. Robert and Beth, Gilbert and Elizabeth were homeward bound this morning and we had bid them goodbye the night before. Mike and I had a day remaining to soak up more cool Colorado air.

July 16-18 -- of valve stems and tires
Submitted by CaptainJustice on Thu, 07/20/2006 - 10:12pm.Sunday 16th, headed for Lake City to catch up with Robert and Beth arriving by car, and Mike arriving on his R1150RT. Gilbert and Elizabeth were headed there from Fort Collins. Nice ride down the Black Canyon of the Gunnison road. Enjoyed seeing Blue Mesa Reservoir as usual, and that's when the valve stem failed.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison & Grand Mesa -- july 15
Submitted by CaptainJustice on Sat, 07/15/2006 - 8:35pm.Having laid out yesterday, the crisp morning air told me this was a day to ride. After a quick breakfast at the rally site I hit the magic green button and was gone in a flash at about 7a.m. I knew my destination and eagerly anticipated it as I had been there before. No stranger, this "Black Canyon of the Gunnison Road" and I.

CapnJ Trip Report: July 12 - Bryce, Zion and desert heat
Submitted by CaptainJustice on Wed, 07/12/2006 - 8:10pm.The heat won and I've stopped for the night in Page, AZ in a motel with a wonderful air conditioner.
But prior to that, I woke up to a crisp morning at the Cannonville KOA. Was up and off by 9 local time and had a good breakfast at the Hungry Coyote Cafe in Tropica. Now I have to tell you, I was a little concerned about there being a hungry coyote there! After the Hell's Backbone ride the night before I could imagine anything.
July 11 - more Utah & I saw where the Devil lives!
Submitted by CaptainJustice on Wed, 07/12/2006 - 7:40pm.Tuesday was an interesting day. It turned out to be long, too long, due to the dallying at Arches National Park and some poor planning on my part. The morning dawned on the mountain top where I was camped with a brisk temperature of about 40. It quickly rose as the sun began to peek through the huge pines surrounding me. These are "biguns" here.

July 10 - roaming in Utah
Submitted by CaptainJustice on Mon, 07/10/2006 - 8:12am.Only made 324 miles today. Wasted most of the morning doing laundry. It was necessary but the laundromat with 1950's vintage equipment left a lot to be desired. Took 1-1/2 hours for my wash to finish! Used the time to catch up on posting photos and visited with a nice couple from California who have a second home near Yellowstone. She used to be a judge's secretary in California and later became a court reporter. Got sick of lawyers and judges and is now a school teacher.
Another beautiful day in paradise. In a few spots the temp got up to low 80's but the morning was about 50 and most of the ride was 75 degrees or so.
The route down the Idaho/Wyoming border toward Utah was spectacular as always. On the way I found the spot where two years ago Robert and I discovered that we could get a digital cell signal if we stood on the large boulder which had become our kitchen table. Now don't ask me how we would up standing on our kitchen table, but it truly was. I had the propane stove out cooking, I think, steaks that we had picked up in Montpelier. I've marked the spot with the GPS (Garmin model 2610) for the sake of an accurate rendition of the story! While there today I called Robert and he knew right away from where I was calling.
The Flaming Gorge is an awesome display of geology. All along the road, signs are posted telling you the formation, the age, and the manner of creation. There is a geological loop that is reputed to display most of the geography of the area. The end result is a real potpourri of soil types and colors. There are hills with whites and greys, then entire bluffs with deep reds. Dry, dusty hills are punctuated with irrigated lands out of the Flaming Gorge reservoir which was reflecting a deep blue today as the skies began to shed their clouds. I'll have some photos posted, but they won't do it justice.
Attached is the planned major portion of travel for today and tomorrow. It's a PDF file of the map. Utah is exciting.

Riding date: July 10 Day No. 8
From: National Forest near Palisades Reservoir, ID
To: Flaming Gorge, wWY
Via:
Stayed at: National Forest
Stops and Sights:
Miles today: GPS - 324
Cumulative: 3859
Weather: Beautiful. Cool all day.
The roads: Good to excellent
Observations and musings: The travel versus stopped time is proving interesting. I start the timing (via the GPS) when I first crank the motor in the morning and run it until the final stop at night, EXCEPT: I stop it for breakfast and supper because I don't consider that part of the travel time, and I stop it for major sight-seeing or recreational excursions off of the bike. But if I'm driving through, for example, Arches National Park then the timing runs. If I stop the motor to get off and take a photo, the timing runs but if I get off to go into a museum (which is a more extended sight-seeing event) then it stops. Gas stops, it runs.
